The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
