Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
