In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
