Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
